I’m changing things up a bit, and instead of a journal entry for August, I’m doing a recap of the month.
At the beginning of the month I made it a point to make time to fish my favorite river. While the flows are still higher than average for the time of year, I still wanted to see how it looked after our winter and cast a line. On my first trip out there I visited a spot I had fished a few times before. The action was pretty minimal for the majority of the outing, but I was able to bring one to the net at the end.
The Local Creek
One of my more frequented creeks had an increase in cold water being released from a dam upstream, so I took advantage of the situation and explored a section that I hadn't been through yet, but had been curious about.
I hiked down into the canyon and entered the water with the goal of climbing my way up the creek to reach an access point that I had fished before. I made my way up, pool after pool, until I came to a really cool section of little plunge pools nestled just under the end point. The access to this section is very limited, but exploring local waters and finding this little slice of water was rewarding.
Back on the river...
In the middle of the month, I returned to my favorite river several times.
The first of those outings I took an afternoon to drive up to find where the river starts and to explore some stretches along the way. While most of the time was spent scouting for access points, I did stumble upon one spot that gave a relatively easy way to get to a beautiful stretch of water. I fished a good portion of it, but with the sun going down I decided to save the last stretch for another day.
The following week I returned to that stretch with a few friends to share my discovery. We traveled further downstream and worked our way up. The water seemed a bit higher this time, most likely due to a heatwave leading up to this outing. I didn’t get a chance to fish the last stretch yet, but I’m keeping an eye on the flows for when they start to decline a bit.
In the last few weeks of August, I didn’t find as much time to get out on the water. But, the exploration and discovery of new spots in the first half of the month made August a great month of fishing.
