I returned to this specific creek with the intention to explore a bit more of the area. I was chasing brook trout, and was hoping to find better water downstream from where I usually fish.
It’s a narrow creek with plenty of exposed banks in the lower sections. Spots that I thought would hold fish didn’t seem to have any. As I moved up I started to find one or two brookies nestled into structure. A few little bites, and two hookups, but nothing brought to net. One of the hookups was a decent sized fish that I could see rising to insects at the head of a pool. With tension on the line I did my best to avoid the foliage that crowded my position, but a high jump from the fish allowed it to wriggle off the hook.
As I crossed over into the range that I normally fish on this creek the terrain changed. More brush along the edges of the creek, and more trees as well. The structure that used to be in the creek was no longer there after the harsh winter, and newly fallen trees were now bridging the gap between the banks.
I had more luck in the upper reaches, even though the spots where they were holding were more spread out. Three brookies brought to the net within the range of about 30 minutes was an improvement upon the few hookups in the previous hours. Maybe it’s because I’m more familiar with this section.
