Time: 5:00PM - 5:45PM
Weather Conditions: Overcast skies, temps around 48F
Water Conditions: Flows were high with clear water around 54F
The flows were still a bit high, but we’re calming down. I was determined to get at least one fish in the net.
I started casting, searching for water that the fish would be holding in. My first choice held no trout. Drifting the fly downstream from there, through different lanes, I had my first strike. It caught me by surprise and I ended up with my fly in a tree. “Off to a rough start” I thought to myself. Luckily the fly came out easily and was promptly back in the water. Unfortunately another strike and a missed hook set led to the fly taking permanent residence in the tree it had just visited.
After tying on a new fly, I drifted it once more through the seam and hooked into my first catch of the day! After bringing it up though the current, I was able to put the rainbow into the net!
I took note of the water my first catch was feeding in, and targeted spots with the same characteristics as I worked my way upstream. There was quite a big gap between where I got my first strikes to where I would encounter the next.
Casting around a large boulder at the edge of a small pool I got another strike. A little brown took the fly and wriggled off the hook while airborne. Trying my luck a second time in the same spot I was able to bring a brown to the net for fish number 2.
Skipping a tightly covered section with choppy pockets, I ended up at another large pool. There I hooked into fish number 3 and brought another small rainbow to hand!
The waters beyond this point were fast and turbulent, so it was here I decided to spool up my line and call it a day.
